- Reduced approval and follow-up time for process manufacturing events by up to 50% by designing and building an application to manage and collect electronic signatures for approvals and manage follow-up tasks. A similar application shortened approval time for Capital Expenditure Proposals (CEPs) by as much as 75% and ensured compliance with the company’s business rules.

- Shortened managers’ processing time for performance appraisals by 10–25% by resolving chronic programming and access rights problems in the 2004 Performance Appraisal application.
- Increased the effectiveness and efficiency of organizations throughout the company by architecting and building 40+ custom Lotus Notes applications, both requested and proactive.
- Ensured consistent reporting and reduced the time required to produce required monthly water quality report from several hours to approximately five minutes by building a report that automatically retrieved the data and calculated the necessary statistics.
Project Planning & Management
- Prevented potential disruptions to manufacturing operations from the year 2000 bug by managing the Y2K compliance project for all embedded systems in the company’s process equipment.

- Met all cost, schedule, and functionality requirements when managing and contributing to the project to upgrade the MAXIMO CMMS system at Genencor’s Lexington Avenue facility from version 4.01 to version 4.11. Project beat its already stringent downtime estimate.

- Served on the design team of the Lexington Avenue greenfield development facility.
- Consistently brought in capital projects on schedule and on budget in the areas of flammable liquid handling and storage, chemical making, solvent recovery, HVAC, and protection from hazardous chemicals.
- Performed feasibility studies into the manufacture of amino acids and other bio-chemicals. Results from these studies helped company decide to enter the bio-chemicals business.
Continuous Quality Improvement
- Averted risk to approximately $100 million annual business by providing a configurable document management system for plant SOPs, facilitating compliance with ISO 9000 documentation requirements for several production plants, and optimizing plant procedures.

- Remedied problematic event logging and corrective action reporting by assuming maintenance and development of a computerized event-logging system that had been started by an external contractor. Additionally worked with the plant ISO 9000 team to further optimize their processes and address concerns submitted by external auditors.
- Eliminated a wait of up to a week to obtain copies of prior product events by making them available in electronic form 24/7, thereby enabling product analyses that were previously not done.
- Converted the distributed control system (Taylor MOD 300 DCS) from a threat to the usefulness of $15+ million facility into a critical success factor during its commissioning. Ensured the correction of system bugs in beta test system and programming bugs that prevented proper operation of the facility.
- Provided a mission-critical capability to feed sugar solutions at very low flow rates to small-scale fermentations by designing and implementing a unique control algorithm. The alternative, running these same experiments at large scale, could have cost several million dollars per year more, including depreciation effects from needing more equipment.
Engineering Applications & Modifications
- Cut approximately a week of research time for up to ten engineers per project, and promoted process standardization throughout the company, by producing an “Agitation scale-up and analysis kit” that was used by fermentation engineers as a standardized starting point for analyzing their processes.

- Assisted development engineers and scientists in developing their processes by providing assistance with data analysis, process adjustments, and control strategy optimizations. Unit operations included chemical making, aerobic fermentation, centrifugation, filtration, and membrane processes.
- Conserved several hours per week for process engineering by architecting and deploying sets of standardized process data visualization graphs built upon SAS/Graph. The graphs helped engineers and scientists to improve the technical performance of their processes.
- Designed and executed experiments to establish the quantitative impact of off-gas composition on the rate of production of a particular amino acid.
Financial & Statistical Analysis
- Salvaged $10 million in annual business by employing statistical analysis skills to isolate root cause of customer supply chain problem.

- Boosted the quality of financial analyses by making electronic Capital Expenditure Proposals available 24/7.
- Generated and delivered critical economic data to senior management for approximately 12 alternative manufacturing processes and scenarios for “product Alpha” to strengthen evaluations of potential acquisition or partnership.
Business Process Re-engineering
- Enabled compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act by architecting and building a Lotus Notes application to manage and document the change management process for IT Systems. Price Waterhouse Coopers auditors indicated it is one of the best systems they have audited.

- Introduced the benefits of process modeling by building a successful model of one of the manufacturing plants in Finland using process modeling software (Gensym G2 with BDS). Information gained from this and subsequent modeling with BioPro Designer resulted in a 50% increase in plant capacity.
Data Modeling & Database Design
- Prevented a $5 million problematic and premature rollout of data visualization and integration software by counseling management that the data infrastructure required for such systems did not yet exist.

- Demonstrated the value of high-end data visualization software by demonstrating its use in differentiating higher-performing production runs from lower-performing runs, using readily obtainable online measurements instead of time-delayed laboratory tests.
Information Systems Design
- Automated manual record keeping and eliminated short-notice effort by providing a means for Corporate QA and Regulatory to store and retrieve product formulations in a form useful for their purposes from the LIMS system.

Facilitating Change Management
- Prevented significant operational disruptions when site was required to vacate Eastman Kodak Company’s computer systems under a very aggressive timetable, by managing the project and implementing the necessary systems to migrate applications and process data. Deadlines were met and replacement systems were widely seen as improvement over the originals.

Cross-Functional Team Leadership
- Saved 50 people up to an hour a day, and ensured easy access to critical product information, by forming and chairing an international cross-functional group to build and maintain a portal for all product information. The portal is now used by all business functions at all levels, from shop floor to executive vice president.
